Motorcycle Safety

El Paso County Public Health will be CLOSED Thursday and Friday, November 27 and 28, 2014, in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday.

 

El Paso County had 487,456 registered motor vehicles in 2009 with 22,480, or 3.5 percent, being motorcycles. Yet, motorcycle fatalities accounted for 29.7 percent of all motor vehicle fatalities in the county in 2009. El Paso County has been in the top three Colorado counties for motorcycle fatalities with 15 deaths in 2008, 11 deaths in 2009 and 8 deaths in 2010. Of the 34 motorcycle fatalities between 2008 and 2010 in El Paso County:

  • 74 percent were not wearing helmets or were wearing helmets improperly;
  • 39 percent did not have motorcycle endorsements, indicating a lack of motorcycle training; and
  • 38 percent were alcohol-related.

Let's Ride Safe is a campaign to raise awareness about motorcycle safety for all drivers, and it promotes motorcycle safety and training to assure riders have the best chances of survival on the road.
