Recommendations for reporting on suicide: tools for journalists

Suicide is the leading cause of death for youth ages 10 to 17 in Colorado. In El Paso County, the suicide rate among youth under the age of 18 has increased in recent years, from 7 completed suicides in 2014 to 14 completed suicides in 2015 and 15 completed suicides in 2016.

In response, El Paso County Public Health, in collaboration with CBS affiliate, KKTV 11 News, suicide prevention experts, and a nationally renowned media ethics expert, have developed a brief training video for journalists asking them to take the “Five for 5” challenge to save lives.

  • Watch the five-minute video about the recommended approaches to covering suicide.
  • Share the video with five of your colleagues.

The video includes resources and contacts journalists can use when covering stories about suicide.
