Fountain Valley Communities That Care (FV-CTC), an initiative of El Paso County Public Health (EPCPH), actively works to prevent youth substance use in the Fountain Valley by providing resources, education and opportunities. As a community-led coalition, FV-CTC uses an evidence-based approach to promote healthy youth development, improve youth outcomes, and prevent youth substance use.
“With the local implementation of Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Drug Take Back Days and distribution of medication lockboxes, FV-CTC has been able to collect 430 pounds of unused and expired medications and distribute 300 medication lockboxes to prevent drug misuse and unintentional overdose deaths,” EPCPH Policy and Prevention Specialist Emma Woodlard said. “It’s really inspiring to see how simple steps can go a long way in making a positive impact in our community.”
The next DEA Drug Take Back Day is Saturday, Oct. 28, 2023. FV-CTC is partnering with Security Fire Department 1 to host a Drug Take Back Day at 400 Security Blvd. from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Residents can stop by to drop off unused or expired prescription drugs. The simple step of clearing out expired and unused prescription medications helps make our homes safer, aids in preventing drug addiction and can help save lives.
How to Safely Dispose of Prescription Drugs: A Step-by-Step Guide
If you’re planning to participate in DEA Drug Take Back Day in October, consider the following tips to help you prepare:
- Locate a collection site near you
- Gather your unused or expired prescription drugs
Allowed: All unused and expired over the counter and prescription medications (solid or liquid) in consumer containers. Vape products (battery MUST be removed).
Not Allowed: Intravenous solutions, injectables, and syringes will not be accepted due to blood–borne pathogens. Marijuana and illicit substances such as methamphetamines are not a part of this initiative and should not be placed in collection containers. - Follow the instructions at the collection site: Upon arrival, follow the instructions of staff and volunteers. They will guide you on how to deposit your prescription drugs in designated containers safely.
- Safely transport prescription drugs: Remember to put all medications in a sealed plastic bag or leave prescription medication in their existing containers and tightly sealed.
