September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. It is an opportunity to raise awareness, reduce the stigma surrounding mental health, and connect individuals in crisis to lifesaving resources. This September, El Paso County Public Health and organizations across the community are coming together to support a series of walks and runs that support mental health resources and services across El Paso County. This series of events is known as Weekends of Hope.
Each event supports local nonprofits or school districts that are working to reduce suicide. These events are at locations ranging from Monument to Fountain, and many places in between, so you can find one in your area. Here is a quick overview to help you start your plan:
- Sept. 12: The Run4Hope 5K for Schools features an in-person competitive 5K and a 2-mile Family Color Run and walk. This is followed by a community block party and free barbecue!
- Sept. 19: The Make a Connection 5k run/walk in Boulder Park is aimed at supporting suicide prevention and increasing social connection. This event is for physicians and medical providers.
- Sept. 20: The Race Against Suicide is a charity 5k run and a 3k walk to support suicide prevention awareness and resources throughout El Paso County. It will take place at El Pomar Sports Complex, and kickoff with a tree planting ceremony, honoring the lives of those lost to suicide in El Paso County.
- Sept. 26: The Foster the Future 5k Fun Run and Walk raises funds to support programs vital to the health and wellness of the Fountain-Fort Carson community. It will kick off at Fountain-Fort Carson High School.
- Oct. 3: The Out of Darkness walk, held at Memorial Park, is hosted by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
We invite you to grab your shoes — and a friend — and come join us for a time of remembrance, physical activity, fresh air, and connection!
