Water Sampling Instructions for Inorganic Anions in Water

Bromide, Chloride, Fluoride, Nitrate-N, Nitrite-N, Orthophosphate-P, Sulfate

Cost: $30 per test

Samples are accepted 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM Monday-Thursday

Due to test time requirements samples will not be accepted on Fridays or on a weekday before a holiday. For your convenience, a calendar for the year is available on our website: www.elpasocountyhealth.org/service/water-quality Results for samples submitted take 72 hours.

Sample Collection- Private Wells

• Prior to collection obtain plastic sample bottles from the laboratory.

• Collect sample from non-swivel, non-aerated tap (bathtub faucet works well.)

• Run cold water tap for 5 minutes to flush pipes.

• Fill the bottle to the base of the neck.

Sample Collection- Compliance (Public Water Systems)

• Locate a sampling tap downstream of treatment (if applicable), but prior to entry to the distribution system.

• Remove any attachment from the tap such as hoses, filters, screens, or aerators.

• Flush the water for about 10 minutes or until the water reaches a constant temperature.

Test Requisition Form (Fillable PDF on website)

• Record your Public Water System ID Number (for PWSID clients only).

• For entry point samples check appropriate boxes and indicate any treatment information, sample point name/ID, facility ID/type/name (for PWSID clients only).

• Record the date and time the sample was collected.

• Record the address and/or identify the locations where the sample was collected.

• Record any relevant sample site location information

• Check the appropriate box for water type (public system, private well, surface, pond, stream, etc.)

• Check the appropriate box for the test(s) requested on the water sample.

• Enter Customer Information, phone, mailing address, and email address for the results.

Sample Submission to the Laboratory

• Water samples must be received by our lab within 24 hours of sampling.

• Keep samples refrigerated.
