Water Sampling Instructions for Real Estate Package
Your water kit from the El Paso County Public Health (EPCPH) Laboratory will contain the following:
• 250 mL bottle for Inorganic Anions (Nitrate, Nitrite, etc.)
• Bacteriological Test (small clear bottle with Sodium Thiosulfate powder)
• NOTE: Some VA/FHA mortgage lenders may require additional water tests, i.e. Lead. Inquire at the Lab for details.
How to collect your sample:
1. Wash hands thoroughly before and after sampling. Do not touch the inside of the lid or rim of bottles.
2. Do not rinse the bottles.
3. Obtain samples from a stationary faucet that does not swivel (often a bathtub), and without an aerator or screen.
4. Sterilize: Prepare faucet for collection of the bacteriological and inorganic anions by thoroughly cleaning the opening of the faucet with a small brush or clean cloth and household bleach.
5. Run the cold water for 5 minutes prior to sampling.
6. Fill the 250 mL bottle to the top and replace the lid securely.
7. Fill the small bottle to the 100 mL line and replace the lid securely. Over-filled or under-filled is NOT acceptable and will be rejected.
8. Return samples to the lab within 24 hours, refrigerate sealed bottles until delivery. Do not freeze.
9. Complete the EPCPH Drinking Water Analysis Request Form. Please return any unused bottles.
