Get ready to make a splash, because July 11th is National Swimming Pool Day! For many of us, pool days with family and friends are some of the best summer memories. There’s just something about the water that kids (and adults!) absolutely love. From a simple kiddie pool in the backyard to a thrilling wave pool at a waterpark, the call of the water is hard to resist!
Remember to practice water safety, grab your swimsuit, sunscreen, and your favorite float, and celebrate!
Here are some ideas to make the most of it:
- Go for a swim: Whether it’s just you, or you’re hanging out with family or friends, a refreshing dip is the perfect way to cool off on a hot day. Check out this list of community pools and swim spots in Colorado Springs.
- Host a pool party: Invite some friends for a swim!
- Head to a waterpark: If you’re looking for more thrills, a waterpark offers endless fun.
- Play fun pool games: From Marco Polo to cannonball contests, there are tons of games to enjoy.
Remember to swim safely:
National Swimming Pool Day is the perfect reminder to revisit general water safety tips to get most of the pool when having fun.
- Always swim with a buddy; never swim alone.
- Read and obey all rules and posted signs.
- Use a feet-first entry when entering the water.
- Swim in areas that are supervised by a lifeguard.
- Children or inexperienced swimmers should take extra precautions, such as wearing a life jacket when around the water.
- Set water safety rules for your family based on swimming abilities (for example, inexperienced swimmers should stay in water less than chest deep).
- Know how to prevent, recognize, and respond to emergencies.
Keeping Our Community Pools Safe:
Here in El Paso County, we’re fortunate to have approximately 282 regulated public swimming pools and spas. El Paso County Public Health inspects these facilities to make sure they meet Colorado’s Safe Swimming Pool and Mineral Baths Regulations. Private pools and spas are not inspected.
Wherever you choose to swim, remember that proper pool and spa maintenance is key to preventing the spread of illnesses, like gastrointestinal and respiratory diseases, that can come from improperly maintained water.
