Every child is different. They all learn to talk, walk and play at their own pace. But sometimes parents notice that their child is taking a little longer to learn certain skills. Maybe the child has trouble talking, finds it hard to play with other kids, or has a health problem that needs ongoing care.
When your child needs extra help, deciding what steps to take can be scary. The good news is that you don’t have to figure it out alone. The El Paso County Public Health Maternal and Child Health (MCH) program is here to help every child grow up healthy and strong.
What is the MCH Program?
The MCH program is an EPCPH team that supports children and young people from birth to age 21. It is focused on kids who have needs beyond a typically developing child, including children with physical, learning, developmental, emotional or behavior conditions that need extra care.
More than 53,600 children with special health needs live in El Paso County. The MCH team works to make sure every one of these children gets the right care and resources.
Getting help from MCH is free and easy. You don’t need a doctor’s note or referral to call them, there no income rules, and any families is eligible to receive help.
How They Help: Finding the Right Resources
Navigating conversations with doctors, schools and insurance can feel like solving a giant puzzle. The MCH staff act like a personal guide. When you reach out, staff are able to connect you to medical care, like local doctors, dentists and specialists who test for conditions such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or autism. They can also connect you to therapy services, including speech therapy, physical therapy and even music or art therapy.
For everyday needs, the MCH team can help you find affordable childcare, medical supplies, healthy food programs and free diapers. They can also help guide you on how to reach out to your child’s school for supports such as individualized education programs, or IEP.
Get Involved: The Community Voice Collaborative
The MCH program doesn’t just help families one at a time. It also brings the community together through meetings of the Community Voice Collaborative. This is a friendly space where parents, caregivers and other community members can meet, share their experiences, learn about resources, talk about ways to make local health care better and support other families going through something similar.
